On April 9, 2025, a technical workshop addressing the control of annual ryegrass (Lolium multiflorum) in wheat was held in Xuzhou, Jiangsu Province. Hosted by National Agricultural Technology Extension Service Center (NATESC), the event brought together more than 100 crop protection experts and large-scale growers from major wheat-producing regions. Participants discussed new solutions to control annual ryegrass (Lolium multiflorum) in wheat, with particular attention directed toward Broclozone (BCZ), a new patented compound developed by KingAgroot.

An explosive outbreak of annual ryegrass (Lolium multiflorum)

Weeds have long posed a significant threat to China’s wheat production due to their rapid proliferation, diverse species, high density, and evolving resistance, severely compromising wheat yield and stability. In recent years, a new challenge has emerged across the Yellow-Huai-Hai winter wheat region: the fast-spreading annual ryegrass (Lolium multiflorum), now proving exceptionally difficult to control and causing serious damage.

Annual ryegrass (Lolium multiflorum)

Originally introduced to China as livestock forage and turfgrass, annual ryegrass (Lolium multiflorum) has become a dominant invasive species in wheat fields. Under normal growth conditions, a single plant can produce up to 60 tillers and 15,000 seeds, with major outbreaks reported across multiple provinces.

In recent years, the herbicide resistance in annual ryegrass (Lolium multiflorum) has been evolving rapidly, rendering many conventional herbicides ineffective. Thus, there is an urgent need to develop next-generation pesticides with novel modes of action and implement key weed management technologies.

Broclozone, a breakthrough wheat herbicide

Amid rising challenges in controlling annual ryegrass (Lolium multiflorum) in wheat, crop protection experts nationwide discussed new solutions and technologies. Among these, Broclozone—a novel patented compound independently developed by KingAgroot—attracted significant attention.

Broclozone

As a new DOXP-inhibiting herbicide, Broclozone shows no cross-resistance to other conventional herbicides. It can effectively control key target weeds such as annual ryegrass (Lolium multiflorum), American sloughgrass (Beckmannia syzigachne), blackgrass (Alopecurus myosuroides), Japanese foxtail (Alopecurus japonicus), cleavers (Galium aparine), and chickweed (Stellaria media). Meanwhile, it has both soil and foliar activity, and is safe to use in wheat, soybean, corn, peanut and other crops.

Participants also conducted a field visit to evaluate the performance of Broclozone, especially its efficacy against key weeds and safety for wheat crops. The compound demonstrated superior efficacy against annual ryegrass (Lolium multiflorum) compared to mainstream alternatives when applied at the 3-4 tiller stage of both wheat and target weeds.
